Workshop Note
I tried to interfere as little as possible - hope you can see the difference! I selected the darkest areas with a heavily feathered selection, and simply employed Shadows/Highlights (Image>Adjustments>Shadows/Highlights in Photoshop) on the shadows section of the dialogue box only (Amount = 35%, Tonal Width = 50%, Radius = 30 pixels). Hope you don't mind!
