Photographer's Note

I never tire of panning cyclists and what better city to do it in than one of the most bike friendly cities in the world!? Come rain or shine tens of tens of thousands of trips a day are made to and fro across the city ..............

Shutter speed 1/50th sec
Aperture f/5.6
ISO 500

I often shoot at 1/40th too when panning things moving at the speed of bikes and at night even slower!

The key decision is what level of blurring of the background you might need to emphasise the movement and presence of the subject - tracking the subject through the scene - locking the focus - you can preset the focus on an area you know your subject will pass and hold it while you pan - in the case of this cyclist she was maybe the third image I took along this track - the others are Ok but she is a more interesting subject - I like that small tension as she is about to swing around and cross the road. There is obviously some element of instinct for what is the appropriate movement of your own body to match the speed of the subject and timing is also crucial to get your subject where you want them in the frame - you have to track them into the frame and continuing your movement shoot at the same time when they are where you want them to be.
