Photographer's Note
Bike light, bike bright, first bike I see tonight. I wish I may, I wish I might, ride my bike right out of sight.
You ain't never biked through Manhattan at night? You've been sitting still all your life.
Night York City rolls on.
Daily Life? Where's the "Nightly Life" category, TE?

One thing for sure, Hugh...
It is quite obvious that you've been hooked to the 'panning' obsession.
Hey !
You're not the first one and for sure - not the last one !!
Actrually - it started some 80 years ago and after few attempts - they called it 'A MOTION PICTURE' !!
(:-))))))
All the best Hugh, for you and your York

Well Hugh...
You told me once that I was not able to judge masterpieces and that I had not enough sensitivity. Since then, I did not have the desire to critique your photos. You know, I prefer to leave critiques to people who value them (and by that, I don't mean they have to agree with them!). And I will keep in saying what I think (as much as possible) and not use everywhere the so overused word "masterpiece". So, I'll tell you in advance: sorry!
Now, in my modest opinion, I know one thing or two about panning. In my small gallery, I have a few panning photos. And I have two of night panning. I confirm, it is not easy to do! Tons of photos have finished their life in the garbage bin. But, if they are the most challenging, they are also the most interesting. The tricks is not only to get a clear subject, but the lights behind should make some nice pattern. And here, you have both. I love the ground, kind of rusty silky ground... and the complete shadow... just great. I like also the truck (hey! not sure it is, but it might be!) on the right part that seems to be slowly dismantling itself into parts.
So, hats off to you. It is a good panning photo!
And your previous one is also good. But I won't push my luck by doing a second critique! :))))

Hi Hugh,
Did not saw this one from your posting yesterday...
I hope i can explain and you understand why i like this one much better than your previous panning shot. This one looks much more natural, not in the colors because they were good in the other one, but in a way how we are looking to it.
It's the way the panning looks, the cyclist is here better in the frame, the movement towards us...i really hope you understand what i mean.
The other one looked very different than a normal panning shot. I was not in doubt, i just wondered about the panning in that one...really no hard feelings to your work as a photographer.
This one is also better i think when i look at his position and his dark shadow in front of him and the car plays an important role as a second focal point...i like that part a lot.
Kind regards, Henk

Hi Hugh,
I like the effects of your nocturnal pan. Light trails in the background, and the blurred out wheels of the bike for example. The biker's face seems to be the sharpest point of the photo which is important.
I'll have to give this a shot tonight. Bright lens, opened up with an exposure of about a 1/6th of a second. Got it.
Regards,
Brian

Good question you're asking there...not so many people out for night life...fascinating. Another very nice one Hugh, he almost seems to be floating, well done.
I have the feeling you need some courage to bike in NY ? But maybe not more than to drive...
Sorry for abruptly changing subject, but as I see motion picture here above, regarding your series in the Chiapas, have you seen "The violin", by Francisco Vargas ?
Night' (for when it's there for you, bien sûr):-)

Oh! I have missed this one! I like it! The panning and this lonely biker in an empty decor. I like the colors. Not only the striations of flashing lights, but also the brown background. A lovely picture, Hugh.
