Photographer's Note

We visited the temple in the town of Pai, high in the mountains of Mae Hong Son, in the far north. There was a ‘gnarn sop’ (funeral ceremony) taking place. He must have been an important man, because many, many people were attending. In the photograph, on display, he was an old man in the uniform of a government official. Many of the mourners were old people, like this woman. Is she remembering an old friend, from her youth? She is wearing the traditional flat cane hat of Mai Hong Son, once everyone wore it, but these days it is only worn by the older people. Twenty years ago, this province was so remote that it took days of travel by bullock cart to reach it. Now there are internet cafes and burger bars and the kids wear modern western style dress. Like her old friends, this woman’s world is gradually passing away.
