Microbes and Hot Springs

I noticed that this is my 300th picture from the United States, so I guess that deserves something special and fortunately, finding something special in Yellowstone National Park is not a particularly difficult task. This is still a photo from the Upper Geyser Basin, which also includes Old Faithful. Seen here is not a geyser, but a microbial mat, often found near hot springs. In summer the microbes in the mineral-rich water produce the most vivid orange, yellow and red colours. The blue pools in the right hand side background together form Doublet Pool, a hot spring of 2.4 metres deep and a temperature of about 90 degrees Celsius.
