Photographer's Note

Another scanned Kodachromes slide from Algeria in 1975. The technical quality is quite low, I won't deny that, but I rather like these two elderly gentlemen gently greeting each other. Since 38 years have passed I think I could safely say that they are no longer among us. The two younger men in the background, having fun at me, are hopefully still around.

This is from Laghouat, a large oasis on the northern fringe of the Sahara. Coming from Algiers you reach Laghouat quite soon after crossing the Atlas mountains.

In several medium-sized Algerian towns in those days there used to be three hotels: an expensive government-run luxury (well...) hotel, one decent middle-class hotel and one for those with very little money to spare, usually absolutely disgusting. The government hotels were usually too expensive for me, and in Laghouat the middle-class place was full. So I had to spend my night trying to get used to the smell of the cheap place, hoping I wouldn't have lice or flees crawling or jumping all over me. Eventually I was all right and could proceed further south early next day.
