Captured this Suffolk Pink Farmhouse earlier on today, a very cold and misty start, and it reminded me of this story...Holly Bellingham, the first woman to sit on the board of Ipswich Town FC, said the local council was attempting to turn a medieval village in Suffolk into Disneyworld.
She received a letter telling her that her Grade 1-listed whitewashed home in Lavenham must be "Suffolk pink".
The businesswoman, who is chairman of Marketform, a liability indemnity group, and a director of Ipswich Town, said there was "no rhyme nor reason" for the decree from Babergh district council.
She added: "The whole thing is very odd and I fear Babergh is trying to turn Lavenham into a weird and wonderful version of Disneyworld.
"You would think the council would have more important things to worry about and spend their time on than this.
"Babergh is making a decision based on how the properties were 300 years ago when they were all one big building.
"But it means that some of our house will remain white and another part will be Suffolk pink."
However, Mrs Bellingham, who converted the house a few years ago, said that she and her husband Simon Turner would reluctantly comply with the order.
"We love the village dearly and we think painting our home a silly colour to keep some bureaucrats happy is a small price to pay," she said.
They were told to change the colour after a neighbour two doors away was encouraged to paint her home pink last year.
The two cottages sit on either side of a florist, Tudor Rose, which is a muted green colour. Pat Green and Danny Preston, who run the shop, have not been told if they will have to make same change.
Mrs Green said: "We don't really know what has been going on. Ours is a listed property but we have had no contact with the council.
"We don't really want to comment on what Babergh might have said as we are literally stuck in the middle. But we would not want to paint our shop as all the buildings just merge into one."
The council said it wanted the cottages to be the same colour because they used to be part of a single building.
A spokesman added: "We have written to Mrs Bellingham, who is the owner of 7 Water Street, requesting that she complies with the listed building consent granted in 2004.
"Our aim here is to ensure numbers 7 to 9 Water Street have the same pale pink exterior colourwash, as this was originally one building, to distinguish them from the adjoining properties."Story from The Telegraph.
