Photographer's Note

Smoking bans are public policies, including criminal laws and occupational safety and health regulations, which prohibit tobacco smoking in workplaces and/or other public spaces. Legislation may also define smoking as more generally being the carrying or possessing of any lit tobacco product.

The rationale for smoke-free laws is to protect people from the effects of second-hand smoke, which include an increased risk of heart disease, cancer, emphysema, and other diseases.

The World Health Organization considers smoke-free laws to have an influence to reduce demand for tobacco by creating an environment where smoking becomes increasingly more difficult and to help shift social norms away from the acceptance of smoking in everyday life. Along with tax measures, cessation measures, and education, smoking ban policy is currently viewed as an important element in lowering smoking rates and promoting public health. When correctly and strictly implemented it is seen as one important policy agenda goal to change human behavior away from unhealthy behavior and towards a healthy lifestyle.

Research has generated evidence that secondhand smoke causes the same problems as direct smoking, including lung cancer, cardiovascular disease, and lung ailments such as emphysema, bronchitis, and asthma. Specifically, meta-analyses show that lifelong non-smokers with partners who smoke in the home have a 20–30% greater risk of lung cancer than non-smokers who live with non-smokers. Non-smokers exposed to cigarette smoke in the workplace have an increased lung cancer risk of 16–19%.

Euh...I am a big criminal : I smoke about 40 cigarettes by day :oO. My life is difficult since some years (new laws, new habits...)...I like this scene of three banners ;))). Great tilt here...Usually, I don't like tilts, but it works very well here, building a special geometry and mood.

Hi Korkut,
I particularly like this photo. The b&w is beautiful, enhanced with a lot of textures (the rough ground,the shiny shoes). The light is gorgeous and the unusual POV attarcts the eye. Plus, I like the dynamic given by the line on the ground from bottom left that leads the eye to the group of 3 guys on the top right hand side.

Methaba Korkut! I agree with the law on the prohibition of smoking! I agree that it is rudeness the nuisance of fellowmen in closed space! NO smoking! Splendid your friends good the meeting? The picture tilted? The reason is the drink?

Your composition is perfect as always.
Like the scene with stiff line and even stiffer number in lower part and guys up there relaxed in spite of stiff "uniforms".

Bu bakış açısını Musa'nın (pardon Mesut'un) hangi emrine sığdıracağımı bulamadım !
Geçen gün BBC'nin haber programında gördüm, Londrada kalabalık bir yerde gazeteciler haber yapıyor. Aralarından biri makinesini tek baçaklı bir stativ'e (monopod) bağlamış. İkide bir makineyi kafaların üstüne uzatıyor oradan uzaktan kumandayla çekim yapıyor.
Sen de herhalde benzeri bir teknik uyguladın; yukarı değil de aşağıya doğru. Artık fantazinin sınırı yok kimbilir daha neler çekersin !
Şaka bir yana bu da "deneysel" bir iş, güzel de grafik kokusu olan bir iş.

Hello Korkut,
Another excellent shot from you! The low POV is great, as is the composition with the diagonal line leading to the three men. The slanting plane is excellent, not only because it makes for a more interesting picture, but also because of its symbolism, at least in Czech, as we say "it is tipped", or "it is slanted with you" when you are begging for a problem to happen, as these men are with their habit and as you suggest in your note :-)

surely could pass off as bankers if they had those cigarettes dangling or the mafia if they had their hair back brushed with extra moose without those beaming and flashing faces!

but an interesting pov with the tilt, the whole combo just works well with the dark tones..

How are you doing!
I like the huge tilt here! Mainly because of the line going straight into the corner. If it was not for this line, the tilt would be useless. So it's a very nice move by you! It creates a sense of motion and geometry. Very good!

As usual, your b/w tones are really neat! However, I'm not keen on the vignetting you create. It's a trend people seem to like, but personally, I'm not fond of it

the focus seems to be on the numbers, but I find the sharpening a bit strong...It's sharp as a knife! That's too much!

Doesn't look like much of a party to me! Where are the women? Ah, they are smokers, real criminals!!! Thank God, in Greece, despite the law, anyone can smoke freely in almost anyplace, especially in bars! Long live the disobedient spirit of the Greeks!!! If the second hand smokers want to avoid the damage caused to them by smokers, they can start smoking themselves :-P... So, you can have some crazy fun moments in healthy Germany, but I prefer "dirty" Greece!
