Photographer's Note

The new Suburban "Sun Station" has been completed as the largest cave in the world soil with 207 meters long, 20 meters wide and 15 meters high.

The cavern of platforms on the surface is the largest in the world. In this issue has been conceived as a space on two levels: the lower and the upper platform, called 'mezzanine', which will facilitate the movement of passengers throughout the aircraft for access to the platform and the vestibule Station, where there will be a direct connection to the 1, 2 and 3 of Metro.

On each platform have been designed four pairs of escalators that connect the two levels. In addition, two fixed and two stair lifts, one at each end. According to De Santiago, the cavern has been built through an "orderly" process of excavation and concreting of successive galleries, made by traditional mining methods, which make up the outer shell of the cave, like a keel boat inverted.

This shell was built around the Atocha-Chamartin tunnel that previously had been excavated by a tunnel. Once completed, was empty at the interior of the cave, to demolish the tunnel lining and the enforcement against the reinforced concrete vault. To this end, in a first phase is dug two wells from which undertook the implementation of the cavern.
