Photographer's Note

coming back to our 4-day hike in the Lares Valley - here's an image from the beginning of the second day and most difficult day of the hike of 22km, two passes of 4200m and 4600m. we had just left the village of Cuncani (although I think "village" a big word for few houses - you can see the roofs of the buildings down in the valley - thrown around) and were slowly climbing the path to the first pass. on the way we met Señora Leonarda, who was kind enough to let us see inside her house - small and fairly dark, because the openings for doors and windows are as small as possible to keep the heat in. her bed was a simple wooden platform on four wooden legs, while under the bed she had about 15 guinea pigs shuffling in the freshly cut grass.

the sun was just rising over the mountains to my left, and the valley slowly filled with sunlight. I liked the contrasts between light and shadow and, of course, how small Kristaps looks against the landscape. the mountain with the glacier in the background is Nevado Sirihuani (5399 meters), and it was the first thing we saw when we got out of our tents in the pre-dawn light. beats the view over the 1st Avenue in NYC hands down.
