Photographer's Note

This is my 6th photo in my theme: When I am president of Peru.

When I saw this scene I authomatically had an idea that combines sport and women's advancement.

In general, there is a worrying trend of people doing no sports in Peru. There are however football and minifutball fields throguhout the country such as this one in a small village in a remote island in lake Titicaca. However, when these fields are used they are used exclusivelly by men. Other than these, there are few public fields for other sports. In Peru as in many countries, futbol is seen as a man's sport.

I think that the ministery of health should organize women's teams and competitions through every province, with incentives of course. This would attack the lack of sports problem but would also be a nice tool against machismo.

Let me explain. Hispanic culture is already very mysogonist, but it pales in comparison to Inca culture. Overall in Qechua speaking areas women are little more than beasts of cargo and child making factories. I think that by encouraging women to participate in sports, particularly one that is seen as a man's sport would provide women some kind of psycological empowerement that may reflect favourably in their relationships with the males in their life.

THis picture was taken on a football field in the hills of Amantani Island in lake titicacaat over 3800 meters of altitued while being traversed by women carrying all kinds of burden. This is the inspiration for my idea.
