Photographer's Note

As we were leaving Torres del Paine to drive towards Argentina I glimpsed this view when looking into the mirror of the car. We didn't have much time, as we had a long drive ahead of us, so I could not set up the tripod. But I managed this shot handheld.

There was such an incredible dynamic range in this shot, Shadows, light beams, fog, hard sun light, haze,..., that I didn't think I would be able to capture it accurately. So I didn't look at it again for a few month. But yesterday, being off work sick, I got bored and had a go trying to process this.

I created 5 exposures from the RAW image to cover the dynamic range as much as I could, and then combined them in Photomatix. The blended image was tone mapped to create the look you see here. I then did a little work in Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop to adjust curves and levels and add a warm-ip filter to the sky.

I felt that the result looked like something out of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings rather than Chile. Hence the title.
