‘Laguna Chaxa - In the quietest moments’

This is the best I could do with my camera. The quality isn’t really good because the picture is taken with low light very early in the morning right after the sun rose from behind the mountains.

Near San Pedro de Atacama the Laguna Chaxa is located at an altitude of 2.300 meters. Early in the morning in a remarkable silence you can find here a lot of flamingos.

Three different species live there:
- Andes flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus)
- James’ flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi)
- Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis)

Golden light made a special texture over the lake surface and the mountains. The Flamingos just seem to be indifferent to this beauty... my humor only.
Wonderful natural environment, no town or village in sight, and yet - a heaven for those beautiful birds.

Een schitterende foto, zeker gezien de lastige lichtomstandigheden. De pastelkleuren zijn heel mooi en het licht op de berg prachtig en de flamingo's, die rustig in het kalme water naar voedsel zoeken, geven de foto een nog kalmere sfeer. Heel mooi fotowerk!

Hello Paul,
If I were in a place like this I would be perfectly happy to manage a photo of this quality. The flamingos, looking for breakfast in pairs, enliven the view and provide fine focal-points in a scenery largely characterized by hazy colours. The distant mountain looks like it was created in a Hollywood studio. Quite amazing.

Dag Paul,

lang gewacht voor een nieuwe foto the plaatsen.
Uw tweede fot is echt mooi met de Flamingo's meer in detail.
maar de hoofd foto geeft er een mooi panorama erbij met de bergen in de achtergrond.
Mooi maar een niet gebruikelijke 50/50 beeld, nochtans op TE zijn weinig mensen dan dit zien.
Heel mooie vakantie foto, goed foto werk, bedankt.

What a beautiful photo, the sense of calm is palpable in the still waters. You have such depth in the many layers of land and water leading off to the mountains in this distance which themselves are under superb light.very cool photo.

Wat een prachtige pastel tinten on dit schilderij.
Het licht spat ervan af. Ik snap niet dat die flamingo’s hun kop in het water stoppen in plaats van het schitterende landschap te genieten.

I have the same experience too, at early morning and at evening are more beautiful see with our real eyes, not easy to create a photo that look like what we saw in the real environment.

Good frame to show the nature view in the morning with some early birds by the water, thanks for sharing.

Hi Paul,
I am always confused about flamingos. I remember on Cyprus they were coming only in winter, and tourists come in summer so they never meet. Here you were in July means in their winter, which is more bearable for tourists on a real desert, right? So actually coming to Atacama in the best time, winter, you have a chance to meet flamingos?
Very attractive capture. It is amazing to spot these birds in their natural environment which is so picturesque anyway. The conditions were quite challenging indeed but the effect is stunning anyway.

The soft colors of the mountains in the background and the flamingos give very good depth to the composition! Wonderful place and a perfect capture of that!
