Photographer's Note

the beginning of our two week trip through northern Chile. not exactly in the footsteps of Che and "The Motorcycle Diaries" (although we did consider naming our quietly suffering truck La Poderosa), but close enough. the trip has left me blisfully and completely in love with the country, for it not only has most beautiful and friendly people, volcanoes, ocean beaches and lakes, but also a desert, which is a sure way straight to my heart. I'm always amazed to discover places where I feel at home, and Chile is one of them.

it goes without saying that the two weeks we had were way too short a time to see everything we wanted, especially since we tried to find a balance between exploring places and photographing places, which sometimes can be mutually exclusive - if you want to wait for a nice light, you cannot get anywhere else (even knowing that there is no guarantee whatsoever that this nice light will actually appear). still, I enjoyed every minute of the trip and would go back right now without a moment of hesitation.

about the photo: taken on Chile 11 highway near the village of Copaquilla when we were on our way from the coastal city of Arica to the village of Putre near Parque Nacional Lauca. the road goes from sea level through precordillera to altiplano at around 4000m, which means that breathtaking sceneries are guaranteed.

RAW, ISO 200, 30mm focal length, spot metering.
