Photographer's Note

The pollution of Tietê is the result of the disorganization and of the irresponsibility that accompanied the modern industrialization, in Europe and in Brazil. Rio of integration from São Paulo, Tietê passed, mainly starting from 1930, to serve as industrial and urban sewer. As some specialists, “besides, thanks to an unhappy suggestion of the then mayor Ademar of Barros-that interconnected the whole sewerage system of São Paulo in 1955-, the dejections of the whole industry from São Paulo started to finish in Tietê.”

At the beginning of the eighties, he had become a filthy and evil-smelling river in the area where ten million people lived and they worked about 30 thousand factories. His/her course, already without any transparency and always covered by an oily film, it was a dead world. to not to be for the great variety of dangerous microorganisms that you/they proliferate in that middle. To have an idea, annually they are solitary of the rivers Tietê and Pine trees 5 million of cubic meters of sediments, garbages and industrial and domestic efluentes of sewers, what is equal to 850 thousand full trucks. If put in line would cover five times the distance among São Paulo-Brasília.
