Photographer's Note

Saint Sarah's sanctuary in Arpoador, Rio de Janeiro, the first dedicated to the goddess in Latin America. Although not recognized by the Catholic Church, Saint Sarah's worship is popular among the gypsies. According to the myth, she could find her way through the sea following the stars, thus leading Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome, Mary Jacobe and Saint Joseph of Arimatheia (who was the keeper of the Holy Grail) back to land. The city born over the shores they landed is called Saintes-Maries-de-la-mer, in southern France.

In Rio, Saint Sarah faces the sea since 2004, when a group of gypsies built this sanctuary.
