Photographer's Note

To old Church of Saint Sebastian was raised for shelter the image of Saint Sebastian, Holy patron Saints of Bagé, some years after foundation of the city. To present Church, work of the architect Pedro Obino, date of 1878. Francisco Carlos Martins, father of Gaspar Silveira Martins, donated a big amount for the construction of the new church and, as reward, the cathedral shelters, by means of his tower right, the graves of Gaspar Silveira Martins and its family.

In 1893, during the Revolution Federalista, the cathedral and the Plaza of the Cathedral were stage of big events in the episode that stayed acquaintance as Fence of Bagé, when forces revolutionary, intending take the city, obliged the legalistic-republicans, commanded by the Colonel Carlos Maria da Silva Telles, it arm the defense of the plaza. The temple was transformed in hospital of blood, while next to the lateral walls were buried the dead persons. The church stayed with its walls nailed of bullets. Alone the image simbolizadora of the Hope, in the facade, received no projectile
