Photographer's Note
Of the 23 species of crocodilians, eight carry out attacks on humans, among them this guy...a black caiman (Melanosucus niger). Recently a 6-year-old girl was attacked and killed by a giant caiman in Colombia.
Caimans are a protected species in some areas of Brazil, and where they are not, their reduced numbers have resulted in increased populations of capybara, which destroy crops, and piranha, which pose a threat to cattle in flooded pastures. While caiman attacks are quite rare (as opposed to several hundred per year by the Nile crocodile), they are not to be messed with...particularly those over 2 m in length.
