This is a humble monument I found in a big square in central Corumbá. In the background you can see Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora church, the same of the previous post. This monument was created by a local artist and it is paying homage to the Brazilian soldiers who fought during the world war II. (each soldier means the army, marine and air force)
Brazil was neutral during the first years of the war, in 1942 Brazilian government let the American army to use Brazilian seashore and islands to reach Africa while many Brazilian boats were destroyed by German submarines. The first Brazilian soldiers were sent to Italy in 1944, fighting against Germans at north of Lucca city. The Brazilians soldiers used a snake with a cigarette in the mouth like a symbol because it was told it would be easier a snake smoking than Brazil fight in that war. 25,334 soldiers were sent, 465 died and 2,722 were hurted. Many decisive battles were won and Brazilians soldiers had to fight against a terrible winter even without the similar conditions of the enemies. Unfortunately the stupid guy who throw ink against the monument didn't know nothing about this.

You can see a bus stop in the background, it was the place were I took an urban bus to reach Bolivia, located few kilometers far from this square.

Este é um singelo monumento que encontrei numa praça central de Corumbá. Ao fundo vemos a igreja de Nossa Senhora Auixiliadora, a mesma onde estava aquele vitral mostrado ontem. O monumento foi criado por uma artista local, prestando homenagem aos soldados brasileiros que lutaram na segunda guerra mundial.(cada soldado significa a marinha, o exército e a aeronáutica).
O Brasil era neutro durante os primeiros anos da segunda guerra, depois, em 1942, permitiu que os americanos usassem FN e a costa brasileira como ponto de alcance para atacar a África, enquanto muitos barcos brasileiros eram torpedeados por submarinos alemães. Os primeiros soldados brasileiros foram enviados para lutar contra os alemães numa região ao norte de Lucca , Itália, em 1942. O grupo tinha como símbolo uma cobra fumando, tal coisa era uma referência aos que diziam que seria mais fácil uma cobra fumar que o Brasil entrar na guerra.--- 25.334 soldados foram enviados, 465 morreram e 2.722 ficaram feridos. Muitas batalhas decisivas foram ganhas e os brasileiros, mesmo sem roupas apropriadas, enfrentaram um terrível inverno. Infelizmente o idiota que jogou tinta no monumento não sabia de nada disto.
Mais ao fundo vemos um ponto de ônibus, onde tomei um ônibus urbano para chegar até a Bolívia, localizada a poucos quilômetros desta praça.
