JESUS IS CAUGHT BY THE ROMAN SOLDIERS, a photo from Goias, Center-West

Photographer's Note

This banner was created by the same baroque master (Veiga Valle). It is positioned above the entrance of the same church I showed you before and you can see the closed door of it.
This banner is used during one of the most important religious events in central Brazil, during the Holly Week the lights of the town are turned off and a big procession begins. It is named Procissão do Fogaréu (Procession of the big fire). Each colonial church of the town of Goiás is used as a stage for a scene of the prison and condemnation of Jesus.
This tradition was brought from southern Spain during 19th century by a Spanish priest and last for centuries. A group of men (representing the Roman soldiers) are dressed with mantles and pointed hoods taking torches across the town and hunting Jesus, when He is finally caught Jesus is represented by this same banner.

Esse estandarte foi criado pelo mesmo mestre do barroco goiano (Veiga Valle). A peça está posicionada junto à porta de entrada da mesma igreja que tenho mostrado.
Esse estandarte é usado durante o mais importante evento religioso do centro do Brasil, a Procissão do Fogaréu, quando se encena a captura, prisão e condenação de Jesus em Jerusalém. Os penitentes se vestem com mantos e com capuzes pontudos e caminham descalços pelas ruas, representam os soldados romanos em busca de Jesus. Cada igreja representa um palco desse evento e quando finalmente Jesus é apanhado ele está representado nesse estandarte. Essa tradição foi trazida do sul da Espanha por um padre espanhol no século 19 e está viva até hoje.

Hello Jorge,
This banner may have a greater religious significance, but the figures in the WS are more photogenic and the thumbnail is much more eye-catching. But I guess I understand your choice of main upload.

Hi Lorge,
Very interesting story behind the banner.
I have seen occasionally images from Spain of people wearing this clothes which are more popular from being used by Ku Klux Klan in the past. But since we don't have this type of tradition I was wondering why they cover themselves so tightly. I suppose nobody wants to be associated with a soldier who tortured Jesus so it makes sense that they are covered up so well.

It looks like this depicts Jesus long after he was arrested. This must be after Pilate had him flogged.
