National Historic Monument that retains architectural elements of the eighteenth century. From 1860 to 1978 it served as a prison for women. Since 1980 is the Museum of Penitentiary. Antonio Ballvé was the first director of the former National Jail from 1904 to 1909. The Museum exhibits material corresponding to the activity prison uniforms, weapons, costumes of the prisoners, and so on.
This museum’s objective is to conserve and promote our historical heritage and to show the evolution of Argentina’s penitentiary system. The museum is supported by the Federal Penitentiary Service and bears the name of Dr. Ballvé, who contributed to the humanization of the prison system by abolishing the “regime of silence”. The museum’s building, near Plaza Dorrego in San Telmo, was declared a Historic National Monument in 1982.

Monumento Histórico Nacional que conserva elementos arquitectónicos del siglo XVIII. Desde 1860 hasta 1978 sirvió como cárcel de mujeres. En 1980 nace el Museo Penitenciario. Antonio Ballvé fue el primer director de la ex Penitenciaría Nacional desde 1904 hasta 1909. El Museo exhibe materiales que corresponden a la actividad penitenciaria: uniformes, armas, trajes de los presidiarios, etc.
Su objetivo es conservar y promover el acervo histórico y mostrar la evolución del sistema penitenciario en nuestro país. Depende del Servicio Penitenciario Federal y lleva el nombre del Dr. Ballvé quien contribuyó en a humanización del régimen carcelario haciendo abolir el "régimen del silencio".El solar del museo, en las adyacencias de la Plaza Dorrego,en San Telmo, fue declarado Monumento histórico Nacional en 1982.
