Sunset @ sunrise., a photo from Hawkes Bay, North Island

This photo was taken from the Sunrise Hut at sunset.

Here in NZ a trampers hut is a trekkers lodge in the wilderness. We have them through our national parks and forest parks and in other wilderness areas also. They range from very basic shelter made from whatever is at hand to very flash buildings bought in by helicopter in pieces.

The Sunrise Hut is a flash one with gas cooking and heating and twenty bunks and as tramping (wilderness trekking) is gaining in popularity again the hut was full the night we walked in. There were people sleeping on the floor and there was a tent erected outside on the only flat ground around (the helicopter pad!).

The popularity of the Sunrise is not surprising given the location and views, on a clear day the Pacific Ocean can be seen in the distance over the eastern plains. At an altitude of approx 1350 m ASL the hut just above the bushline and above the hut the vegetation is mostly tussock grass and stunted bushes. And of course the sunrise is spectacular from here also ;-).

with a little bit of sunrise after a very cold night (one more time befroe hopefully soon spring)..
impressive landscape and a lot of spetacular pictures you show us here, also the workshops are very useful and good..

Joking aside, there is a great atmosphere here with thos clouds in the valley, and some hills emerging... I like also the soft sky colors.

This is fantastic, Paul. Love the feeling of beeing above a carpet of clouds like I see here. I like all 3 photos and the context that the one with the hut gives. I would certainly try to sleep in such a place if I had those mountains around me. Now, we need a post with the sunrise showing the view of the Pacific Ocean ;-)

C'est le genre de photo que je voudrais bien réaliser, mais avec 180 mètres d'altitude dans notre région parisienne, ce n'est pas encore pour demain ! ;o))
Magnifique prise de vue de ces nuages formant une sorte de manteau neigeux sur la vallée.
J'aime tout, y compris la lune qui est témoin de la scène.

Hello Paul, How are you? nice shots the three of them but I prefer this only because of the more "moody" atmosphere created by the low clods or mist. Lovely soft colours in the sky, I thought at first it was a sunrise with the moon still out. Sounds like a real beautiful secluded spot. Well done

The clouds give a sure fine effect and the curve of the hills makes for a good depth. The delicate pastel colours convey the sweet atmosphere of twilight. Is that the moon at the upper right corner?

Beautiful moment, the partially lit mountain rising above the cloud line/fog line makes a spectacular sight.
I love the sky, but can't help but think you may have been able to bring out the colours just a little more in post. The pale blue with the pink sitting just above is so pretty. And you threw in the moon just to add even more to the shot :)).
It's very nice Paul, a beautiful spot to spend a reflective moment or two.

This is a very special image, not only the sunset is beuatiful, there is a moonrise over the sea of clouds, yet the cloud is low enough to expose the top of the mountain, a perfect combination of clarity and misty condition for a very special atmosphere. I like it, good composition well balance light, beautiful tone and colors are also well control, looks absolutely natural and yet rich in the pastel tone. Great job.

Hi Paul,
Love the clouds settled in around the mountains and the soft gradient in the sky. Is that a moonset? The WS photo with the hut is a very close second.
