Photographer's Note

8 SEPTEMBER 2004, SWANSTON STREET, MELBOURNE

A girl leans over the edge of the barricade impatiently anticipating the arrival of Victoria's Olympic athletes after their return from the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Though government sponsorship for nation-wide parades for the athletes was never officially granted, the parades ran nonetheless in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

The parade ran through the city to Federation Square where the State Premier, Mr. Steve Bracks, and Melbourne's Lord Mayor, John So, paid their official tribute to the successes of the Victorian athletes. It is estimated that 10,000 people lined the streets to cheer their heroes home.
