Photographer's Note

I visited Melbourne recently and was lucky enough to stay in St. Kilda, an Eastern suburb on Port Philip Bay.

The views from the 7th floor were superb but I think this moment captures the best of it. I was drawn to the silvery quality of the light reflecting from the inlet here, also the serenity of the larger of the boats in the harbour.

The palm foliage in the foreground is practically a trademark of St. Kilda. On the horizon you can see "The West" and evidence of the industrial city this is.

F-stop used was half way between F8 and F5.6

I think this might have come out even better if Id used a tripod.

Post processing: Rotated image clockwise 0.9 of a degree to correct horizon. Cropped from a portrait format scan to a landscape format, also to bring in line with the rule of thirds. Resized image. Unsharp mask. Minimal JPEGing. All in The Gimp 2.
