Finding My Leprechauns, a photo from Victoria, East

Photographer's Note

This is Rye Pier, on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. I might not have found my pot of gold on that day, but I certainly found my leprechauns - three to be exact! Just after taking this shot I met my dear friends Santo (Skippy007), Bill (Treks) and Alfred (Alftreks) for the first time. Actually thinking about it, meeting them was much better than finding a pot of gold anyway :)

A nice color contrast with the blue gray sky, good compo with the long perspective of the bridge

What a lovely story! So this picture must harbour many lovely memories for you, having met your dear TE "pals" at this very spot over three years ago! Yes, better than a fictitious pot of gold any day!

The light in this picture is just delicious - beautiful golden light on the dramatic foreground grasses, the pier and the sea on the right, deep blues in the characterful sky and a lovely rainbow to boot. Lovely strong composition, the line of the pier making a bold line across the frame and the razor sharp horizon dividing the picture in two.

Fabulous colours and light, perfect exposure and, as always, stunning details and sharpness.

Ciao Cara, you found the leprechauns (more like the three Stooges :)) & we found the pot of gold. I thought the rainbow was from Rye, I remember you telling me that you don’t get to see many rainbows in Sydney. Nice moody shot.

A beautiful moody composition with superb lighting. Well composed with the roadway sweeping in from the right and continuing obliquely across the frame. The light across the clumps of grass in the foreground is particularly appealing and the detail excellent. I wish you a pleasant week.

"Leprechauns", a new word in English learnt today, Lisa - but where are they? hidden them well... my humor only.
Nice catch of a rainbow, and long pier in excelent DOF to the whole image.
Notable wind ashore, as I see the small bushs in FG.
Hope you had manage to escape the rain on time...

Gidday Lisa,
Class capture, it actually makes my eyes fight with each other over what to look at, the beautiful pier extending off into the distance, or that mighty fine rainbow exploding from a very threatening sky. Its like two completely different scenes in perfect harmoney. The foreground is brilliant too, that grass has captured its movement in the wind perfectly, and looks almost like its waving in your shot.

Delighted to hear you met some leprechauns too, sure whats a rainbow without a leprechaun :)

Thanks for your recent crits on my shots too Lisa, I did actually take a shot of the Joyce statue that you asked about on the shot of the spike, so I've uploaded him today. No doubt he'd be disgusted by the big modern spike that now faces him in his Dublin!

Love the light Lisa and the texture in the grasses is super, they have a lovely dynamic quality too as they appear to bend in the wind. Perfect how the light highlights the line of the pier and the small yellow figure. All this under a moody sky is lovely, add the rainbow and a leprechaun (or 3) is sure to appear. This shot has real impact!
The light on the whispy grasses is dynamic! It creates a very natural lead, towards the pier and out to sea, where there is a cloud explosion in the sky, highlighted by the rainbow. Certainly your three leprechauns arrived with a BANG!

wouldn't the Leprechauns not be a wee bit out of their home turf in Ireland? Or is it the global crisis that they have to emigrate to down under.
Allways good to meet new people who share the same interests though.
The picture itself is wonderful. Great framing with that lush green grass in the foreground, the never ending jetty leading the eye on and your gorgeous rainbow even without the pot of gold is stunning, the way it disapears in the stormy clouds.

una vista molto particolare che accattiva con la sua luce ed i colori affascinanti e gli elementi tanto contrastanti. Il molo offre magnifica prospettiva ma anche stabilita' mettendo in ordine i superbi contrasti e la confusione naturale. C' e' l' impressione di vento nel primo piano ma il mare e' calmo; c' e' luce calda e pioggia, cielo meta' nuvoloso meta' chiaro ed un arconaleno meraviglioso. Hai gestito la confusione benissimo e l' immagine e' piacevolissima. Talvolta i leprechuns sono piu' vicino da quanto l' aspettiamo:) Complimenti e grazie!

hi lisa,
what a glorious light you have captured in this picture. the resulting colours full of saturation are wonderful and very appealing. they have helped you produce a visually very striking image. the positioning of the pier is excellent leading out to sea and the horizon. the textures of the grasses being blown about by the wind are also a strong feature of the picture. and of course, to top it all off you also captured that magical rainbow to the right of view.

Its the light, colours, mood and what's left to the imagination that shines through! All credit for actually taking the extremely photogenic conditions so expertly. Amazing view, wonderful moment and a very good composition and the way the jetty seems to take you right into the depth of the scene, fully detailed and plenty of elements, every detail, every colour, the golden light bathing the green, the great sky reflected...the rainbow presence...everything really great. Skippy isn't around much any more on TE, thats a shame.
On a personal note, I don't think i've ever photographed a rainbow...You'd think with all the rain out here in western canada I'd have a rainbow shot by now!
thats some pretty funky lighting on that long tall grass! looks almost hdr'ish.
looks really windy too.
a cool looking place, made even better by the rainbow, the excellent cloud coverage and the color splashes.
and also a fine dedication to some TE friends :)

HI Lisa,
For the most part I like the composition and placement of items within the image. The landscape orientation of this works well considering the horizontal nature of the subjects combined with terrific sky. There is a good counterbalance of light and colors here as well. The composition with pier crossing the quiet water and the camera angle, pointed straight to capture not only the pier abut also the rainbow and the well lit grass is excellent. The people on the pier add add nice life to the scene. Brilliant photo.

Great and magical moment here! I really like this light- I'm sure it didn't last long and it's perfect for the shot!
I like the sunlight on the plants in foreground and the sky that almost seems divided in two. The cloudy part with the rainbow gives it a very special atmosphere!
