The isolated salt Lake Ballard is reached by driving 130km north from Kalgoorlie to the small old gold mining town of Menzies and then heading west for 50km along a good dirt road (as long as it isn't raining).
English sculptor Antony Gormley created a permanent installation of 51 silhoutted carbonised steel sculptures for the 2003 Perth Festival.
His models were the people of Menzies. He had body scans done. The closest one in this photo is obviously a male.
On our visit the beb of the lake was of sticky salty mud with people sinking half way to there knees to wander around the sculptures which are scattered around the lake. In the distance you can see a little water.
An intriguing place.
