Photographer's Note
Please open both photos in new tabs for the better versions.
Out near Echo Point in Morton National Park there are lots of what we commonly call Old Man Banksias growing. The botanical name is Banksia Serrata. It is a medium sized tree with thick gnarled and crinkled bark and large flowers.
As it is spring here the new flowers are coming out and the main photo shows a new flower just started.
The flowers grow large and then the spent flowers stay on the trees for a year or more - see the WS for spent flowers and another new one. The old flowers and seeds need to stay on the trees because they only germinate after fire. Last years fires resulted in lots of new banksia plants.

The subject is well framed. The point of view is showing the details of the Old man banksia flower. The light is giving good colors rendering. Have a nice day.

Hi Ian,
I have heard that some creatures are benefiting from the fire but was not sure which ones. I was told about it in California, where the fires are seasonal as well.
Beautiful presentation of the flowers at various stages of development,

Hello Ian,
What an interesting photograph and notes.
This plant has obviously evolved to cope with the natural, hot conditions of Australia.
The shiny leaves make a very pretty collar for the developing bud.
On viewing the w/s, I can understand why it is called 'old man banksia'!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Ian
At least some good came out of the fires although I just wish they hadn't been so intense. Excellent use of selective focus and the workshops compliment the main photo. Tfs!

Hi Ian,
That is one of the most extraordinary flowers I have seen, and those sawtooth leaves look special too. Shallow DoF separates the main subject well from the background.

Hello Ian, I think that these probably got their name from Joseph Banks, scientist and botanist from the ship captained by Captain Cook, whilst exploring the Southern Pacific.
This is a fantastic shot, the sunlight perfectly illuminating the strange flower and leaves.
Informative notes.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Ian,
An interesting species of plat which actually needs fire to propagate, TFS! BTW, you might want to correct Medium to Color (not Black & White). (Now, if I am seeing colors in a B&W photo, that is quite a feat.)
Regards,
MT
