Photographer's Note
Taken at the east end of the south rim, near the watchtower. It was raining here off and on and I tried to work fast. An isolated downpour can be seen in the frame just to the top right of center. Very difficult to get all the elements of this shot to look good because of the variety of light. I used a ND grad, but it was still tough. I used shadows/highlights some to brighten the foreground, but not much, as to preserve the scene as close to how I saw it.

Hi Michael,
Quite a nice image. I like the moodiness captured in the light rays. Good color and handling of the exposure and nice prudent use of post-processing. All around success for me. I didn't perceive the full power of the sky in the thumbnail so I am glad I took the time to open this one.
Cheers!

Hi Michael,
Stunning landscape, shining rain with the afternoon sun is really beautiful, and excellent rendering of the detail in the shade.
Best Wishes for the New Year,
Hisashi

Hello Michael,
I just came upon your excellent gallery of photographs of the rugged landscape in the west. This is one of the most compelling, and also one of the most under appreciated. The succinct but informative note complements the image. The post-processing brings out just enough of the details in the foreground to mimic the eye itself.
Warm regards from Virginia,
Bulent

Michael,
Particularly fantastic this one!
I see you've put together a good couple of pages of excellent shots since I was last in your neck of the woods!
Great stuff.

Wow, unbelivable light, truly breathtaking, I was there a month ago and already want to go back. I have been browsing throuth GC photos on TE and this is probably one of the finest I have found.
