Photographer's Note

Our tour of Wheaton College campus started with historic Blanchard Hall. These are two artifacts we saw in its tower. On the left is Burr Obelisk and on the right is a plaque commemorating John Blanchard, the college’s founder and first president. The nose of Blanchard and the word God on the plaque are shiny because students consider it lucky to rub the nose and that word as they go up and down the stairs of the tower.

During the Civil War, Blanchard Hall was a stop on the Underground Railroad, harboring fugitive slaves on their way to freedom. The abolitionist James Burr was buried on Wheaton's campus. So when the obelisk marking his grave was discovered in 2012, it was fitting to place it in the tower of Blanchard Hall.

The workshop for this entry includes:
James E. Burr 1814-1859: Burr Obelisk is the former grave marker of abolitionist James Burr, who was buried on Wheaton's campus.
Jonathan Blanchard: A plaque commemorating Jonathan Blanchard, the College's founder and first president (1860-1882).
Blanchard Hall Tower: Blanchard Hall tower, in which the artifacts of the main entry are located. Blanchard Hall is the main building of Wheaton College where Humanities and Social Sciences departments, Human Resources, Accounting, and the offices of the President, Provost, and Chief Financial Officer are housed.
