Taxis in New York, with their distinctive yellow paint, are a widely recognized icon of the city of New York1. Taxis are operated by private companies and licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission of New York (New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission). The Commission is a government agency of the City of New York is best known for its responsibility for operating over 13,237 taxis in the city.
