Something’s Lurking Inside

Another photo from the area around Mud Volcano in Yellowstone National Park, where the air smells of rotten eggs, because of the many sulphide gases. Here’s another source of them, Dragon’s Mouth Spring. The steam rising from the cave along with a continuous rumbling sound coming from far within the cave easily leave visitors with the impression that a dragon is truly lurking inside the cave.

A visitors gave this spring its name in 1912, when the water still surged from the cave like the lashing of a dragon’s tongue, which it kept doing until 1994, when the spring became less active. Steam and other gases exploding in the water cause the ominous rumbling sounds. A wider view is found in the WS.
