Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

This is the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a large canyon on the Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park. It is about 24 kilometres long and between 240 and 370 metres deep. The river was named for the yellow rocks of the canyon. Early French traders called the river Roche Jaune, a translation of the Native American (Hidatsa) name Mi tsi a-da-zi (Yellow Rock River). American settlers translated this into “Yellow Stone”.
