Photographer's Note
There is a place in north central Utah that is well known by those who live here, called the Alpine Loop Road. It extends from Timpanogos Cave N.M. to The Sundance Ski Resort, and crosses some very beautiful alpine forest and meadows. The forested area consists of firs, pines, spruce, maple, and aspen, and on the north-east slopes ground is covered with ferns.
I was returning from shooting pictures with my son, we had been looking for cascades and waterfalls to photograph, and the sun had set behind the mountains (big mountains), but there was some cloud cover and interesting natural fill light. In one area, the aspen just seemed to glow with the light from the sky. I had made a couple of exposures, but by the time I got to this location, the clouds had moved on, and my fill light left.
So I cheated, I used the wireless remote control on my D200 and fired an SB800 that I placed close to the aspen and off to the right (bouncing off an aspen to soften the light.
It still too a little control in The Gimp with cropping, levels and bit of dodging to get back close to the original visualization.

Dana, You did capture the forest glow on the aspens. Didn't know you "cheated", so the picture was successful! Somehow I bet if you spent some time making this a b/w photo, you could really capture the forest, not that color is bad.

Oh you cheater...using electronics to augment nature. You should be taken out and flogged with wet strips of velvia. Just say NO to electronics!
PS. You really need to play with my new notebook and Aperture...it's very cool.
