Photographer's Note

This is the Spiral Jetty, a very large work of art installed at the north shore of the Great Salt Lake by well known artist Robert Smithson. It is about a car lane wide, and juts out into the lake as you can see.

Smithson created this work of art in 1970 using the natural black stone that you see in the foreground. When the lake is high, it is only barely visible. This year, however, marks the 7th year of drought, so the water barely touches it. Hopefully, it will begin to disappear once again and we'll have water for our crops and yards!

This may not look very exciting, but it is an amazing work of art! Walking upon it, one can see how time, the lake, the salt, and people have all interacted with it in unique ways. My kids treated it like a big playground while they ran and laughed and played. I enjoyed its position at the edge of the lake, and the interplay of salt and sun and wind and waves. It was a very special place.
