Photographer's Note

This is a view of a few of the ships in the Mothball Fleet in Suisun Bay, with a storm moving in. The Mothball Fleet is said to be the largest collection of ships on the Pacific Ocean. Some of the fleet will be scrapped, but others are part of a reserve military fleet administered by the Department of Transportation's maritime administration (MARAD).

See here for an informative article on the Fleet. The article is from 1997 and so is out of date in some particulars (e.g., the Red Oak Victory is now at Pt. Richmond, CA, where it was built in 1944 for WWII service), but the basic information is good. Another newspaper article, more recent, is here . See, also, the Google map for a view of the fleet in Suisun Bay.

Technical: Rotated a little, light levels adjusted, contrast and sharpening applied.
