Photographer's Note
She was reading her bible on a Friday night, riding the M104 bus down Broadway. She was a Bad B*tch.
(See the Workshop for another look.)
Hey, it's New Yawk. You don't ask questions.
(Have done a second Workshop. Uploaded original from an LCD screen. But on my CRT in my office, it looks as though it needs contrast. Which is better?)

I prefer this one, the workshop version is over-sharpened. On the people in the foreground the level of sharpening isn't a problem, in fact it adds a lot to the texture of the leather jacket of the Bad B*tch. On the other hand the out of focus elements in the background don't look good with this level of sharpening. I think selecting the bus interior and passengers and sharpening them but not the background was the way to go here.
Never mind such technicalities, this is a great shot; a superb slice of New York life. The way she is hunched over her bible, and the fact that neither her hands nor face are visible, give the image an air of mystery. The only clue to her identity and personality is her Bad B*tch jacket, which seems at odds with her choice of reading material.
Good stuff Hugh!
Cheers,
Ben

Hello Hugh,
I like this nice, gritty NYC scene. This woman is just the kind of character who adds some spice to our days. :-) Good capture of the contrasting elements of the bible and the jacket, and the woman in fronts adds some color to the frame.

Hugh,
You have some marvelous shots in your collection. I am particularly struck by this one...intense and acutely urban. Terrific color too.
I have looked at both workshops and I am undecided as to which I like more. In fact each has a different flavor and each stands on its own merit.
Bravo!

Hard to decide which I prefer, Hugh. Both, I suppose, have a strength that only that can convey. These NY shots of yours have a strong and disturbing feel to them, something so powerful and well-seen. For one, I originally thought of the woman in the front as a puppet... she had this rubberlike skin I was struck by. Then there is the title on the back of this leather jacket... very New Yawk, indeed... I so miss it. Have to hop down one day soon!
good night from insanely cold Ottawa...
viszontlatasra to you too,
sasa
