Photographer's Note

Standing 630 feet high and visible for miles around, the Gateway Arch is St Louis' best known landmark. It forms part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and was built between February 1963 and October 1965 when the last piece was put in place.

The arch weighs in at 17,246 tons of which over 900 tons is stainless steel and was built at a cost of $13million. The span of the legs at ground level is 630 feet, the same as the height. Inside each of the legs is what is described as a tram, this is a $3.5million transportation system to lift people to the observation deck at the top of the arch. The observation deck can hold up to 140 persons and the windows are just visible in the photograph.
