Photographer's Note

The Great Lakes not only offer beauty and a great recreational advantage but they also offer the benefit of shipping. Detroit grew out of shipping. The first people arrived by water. Later water would move the materials that fired up the furnaces of industry that made Detroit the most productive center in history. Raw materials brought by ship helped make Detroit the automotive capital of the world and, in World War II, the Arsenal of Democracy. Today a 1000 foot lake freighter can carry the equivalent of 6 100-car trains.

Here trucks backup on the Ambassador Bridge while the ocean freighter Federal Welland moves below. To my right a lake freighter waits to move up stream.

There's some motion blur with the ship as I tried to keep it well enough exposed. I didn't think it would take so long to reach me from where it was in my first photo in this series! In the workshop is a photo of the bridge showing the traffic backup into Canada. Also this is one of my first attempts at using NeatImage.

Environmental
Fuel and emission savings: 14 million gallons and over 4300 tons
To ship the 500,000 tons of cement moved annually from northern Michigan ships use 800,000 gallons of fuel versus 2 million if shipped by truck.

Safety
If trains substituted ships there would be, statistically, 36 rail crossing accidents, 14 derailments and one truck collision.
If trucks were used there would be 141 truck/car accidents, one quarter of which would result in fatalities or serious injuries.
