Photographer's Note

Our hike along the Bagley Lakes & Chain Lakes Loop trails was my favorite of the entire 12 days of our trip. As you can see, the weather was flawless. I’ve got so many photos of this day that it is hard to know where to start, so where better than right in the middle…

About 3 hours into the hike, we reached Herman’s Saddle, the stretch between Mt. Herman and Table Mountain. It is here that we got this first breathtaking view of Mount Baker (I say “first” because it is breathtaking from every angle henceforth along the way) and the valley below. That is one of the Chain lakes you can see (there are three) in what is designated as the Mt. Baker Wilderness.

The mountain, incidentally (as you can guess by its shape), is a volcano -- still active, although, according to the US Geological Survey website, its most recent activity was a “non-magmatic explosive event” in the mid-1800’s.

If you turn around and look the other way from atop the Saddle, Mt. Shuksan rises in equally stunning fashion… but, darn the rules, that photo will have to wait till tomorrow.

Because of the bright sun, I underexposed, then brought up the levels and added back a little of the yellows & greens.
