Photographer's Note

Subho (well spotted that's my name too!) means auspicious and having good omen. 'Nobo' means new and 'borsho' means year. Today we Bengalis all across the globe celebrate the Bengali New Year's day. Along with Bengal many other states like Assam, Kerala, Manipur, Odisha, Tamil Nadu also celebrate their New Year today.

We begin our day by offering prayer to the Gods asking for their blessings for the New Year. Businessmen hold special prayers in their shops as this is the beginning of the accounting year for them too. But that's about it for the serious stuff the rest of the day and evening is for feasting and meeting family and friends.

Pictured here is a traditional Bengali meal prepared at my house few years ago on the occasion of the Bengali New Year.
On the main plate we have steamed rice and the starters (fried spinach with nuts, fried fish, fried potatoes, slices of egg plant dipped in a chickpea flour bater and fried and a mixed vegetable dish with smashed fish head)
In the main course anticlockwise in small containers we have dal(a dish with pulses and various vegetables), dry mutton curry, katla fish curry, sardine like fish cooked in mustard sauce.
After this we have the dessert mango chutney, payesh (a sweet dish made of boiled milk, aromatic rice, sugar/date jaggery) and of course the last but not the least the famous bengali sweets.
This is not for a group but a single person :-)
A photo not of the best quality, but I thought it was fit to share a important piece of my culture.
Thanks for having a look.
