'Elvas - Laundry day at Largo de Santa Clara'

The most picturesque square of Elvas is undoubtedly the Largo de Santa Clara.

Here you find the Porta da Alcáçova (also known as the Arco do Miradeiro). It is a part of the earlier outer wall of the city built during the Moorish rule (when Elvas was named Yalbash).

In the middle of the square there is a beautiful old marble pillory (pelourinho) in Manueline style. It is standing on a pedestal of five steps in polygonal shape.
The top is is decorated with iron semi-spheres. In earlier times criminals were chained to these hooks.

Several times during my visit of Elvas I went to the Largo de Santa Clara and each time cars were parked so that a nice picture could not be taken. When I went a final time the square was empty and even better it turned out to be laundry day.
How nice to visit a historic site on laundry day!
