Photographer's Note

Where do I start with this one?

Here we have a residential building called the Villa Maris in West Vancouver.

This 1960's building is now on a time table for destruction. What a sad day. The city of West Vancouver have voted to tear it down. Why? My guess would be its because its considered to be ugly, and an eye sore for locals.

First - some context. Its located in West Vancouver, our most rich, affluent area of Vancouver. Its located directly on the waterfront. Its prime location. My educated guess is, locals don't like the old retro look to the building and have petitioned to tear it down :(

There is a sister-building next door, and that one is being torn down too :(

In fact, when I was photographing this Villa Maris, a local man approached me. He actually said to me "Why would you want to take photos of this building?" I tried to explain to him how its a beautiful piece of old retro architecture, and he completely disagreed. He said its "ugly" and "deserves" to be torn down.

This man is exactly what i'm talking sad. No appreciation for retro architecture. Just because something is different, it doesn't mean its ugly.

Please view the WS photos for more views. Its so unique, so worthy of standing tall on the water front.
