Photographer's Note
Well after what seems like months since I was last on TrekEarth & having just returned from Christmas holidays in Canada, I offer this HDR shot from Vancouver Islands rugged west coast.
I had the opportunity to spend the day snapping shots with Paul Enns (PJE). Due to weather conditions, the majority of the 'usable shots' were from the Ucluelet area.
This is one of my favorites from the trip to the coast from my home town of Port Alberni (an hour and a half away).
All the best to my friends here on TrekEarth in the new year!

Happy 2008 to you, Dan! Greetings from Malaysia!
Such a superb view with mists splashing up the rocks and contrasting well with waves to the dark rugged textured rock pattern. Great composition here to see such a coast scene. Well done. TFS

Very nice! I like the ghosting of the waves against the rocks - it does look supernatural. The repetition of shapes from the rocks to themainland and islands also works very well. The skyis very interesting too with just a hint of colour. Great work.

I love it Dan. The tech. quality is excellent of course and your choice of slow shutter is perfect with just the right effect on the water. The subtle tones are so beautiful and so restful. Great shot
Happy New Year

Wow, great shot Dan! I really like the mist effect from the long exposure on the waves, which always creates an otherworldly feeling in a photo. The other thing I really like is the compression from the long lens, which makes all the rocks and islands seem close together and gives a very effective composition. A beautiful piece of work. Sorry I couldn't get together with you and Paul, I was working right up to Friday, and when I finally made it over to Port Alberni I had so many family things to go to that I didn't have any time. Looks like you had a great trip anyways. Happy New Year!

Great shot Dan. The slightly desaturated colours and the way that the surf 'glows' with the slow shutter speed makes this a real 'winner' of a shot. The rocks in the foreground act as a natural barrier and allow us to feel 'safe' despite the stormy sea. Excellent work. Best wishes for 2008. Regards, Paul.
Sorry - just realised I ran out of :))
Dammit!! :((

This one of the best shots I have seen. The detail in the rocks is strong and the longer exposure has given a softness to the crashing waves. There is also some nice subtle colour in the sky.
Excellent shot that is going to my favourites.

Mr Walsh!
Welcome back to Canada! Oh! You already left Canada and return to Singapore? Welcome back to Singapore then. And welcome back on TE. And welcome... ok, enough! ;)
I like gray mood sometimes. Especially if there is some nice, vaporous, cloudy, silky, white waves accompanying it. It seems cold and barren and rough, but there is the soft touch of the water that comes and soften the coarse surface of the rocks. That's beautiful...
The point of view is perfect. I much prefer the 2/3 bottom part than the upper part, in fact, the sky seems a little odd to me. Not too sure if it was actually like that or if it was an effect of PP or compression of the file. But that is not a big thing. I would, personally, get rid of the white "thing" that is on the upper rocks, left side, with the trees as background.
I wish you, dear Dan, the best of year for you and the people that you love! Hope to see new photos from you!

Happy New Year, Dan--I like the desaturated look here, it helps emphasize the textures without having to go all the way to B/W. It's a very nice composition to emaphasize the soft spray against the hard rocks at lower left. There's a slightly odd greenish tint to the sky, not sure why, but it's not necesarily bad--it gives a painting-like look. Regards, Ken.

Hi Dan,
And a Happy New Year to you and yours! And a great west coast shot too. Great details and clarity here with excellent composition. Great work and TFS. PS How does the Sigma 170 - 500 work for you - am contemplating such a lens somewhere in my future. Take care. Gerald

Great landscape picture. I like the layers of contrast of the rocks in the sea, together with the effect of motion of the waves and sprays.
Happy new year !

Hello Dan,
so you had a good time back home?
There is a strange mood to this picture. I think it comes from the color tones. It's different from the usual TE posts we see here where the colors are so saturated. It's more subtle.
It's often a good idea to bring a long lens when going to shoot landscapes. More often than not it results in outstanding landscapes. The long exposure does the trick here to bring some mood.
The sky is accessory. It adds nothing in my opinion, but you could not do without it...
Happy new year!

I like the softer look of the water and the mist against the rugged rocky beach. The depth is very nice too, with a distinct and interesting foreground, mid-ground, and background. Welcome back! I’ve been gone for a while too.
Happy 2008!

Hello Dan. I would have to say that this is one of my fav's as well that you took. Not that I saw most or all that you shot on the coast. We photographers tend to get into our own creative zone even when shooting together. You saw things your way and the same applied to the photos I took. I always that an interesting dynamic where all the techniques you know is applied to the creative sense of capturing the moment as it were.
Upon reviewing the photos I took on the coast I concluded one thing. I did not take enough, and I did not spend enough time thinking creative compositions. I could have done alot more I know.
Your photo here with the smoothened waves breaking on the rugged rocks brings in some very nice contrasts to the scene. I think I even remember where you took this one too. The Zoom factor really helped pull the shoreline together in the frame. It is a real nice photo Dan to say the least. I see no mention of any Lee filters used in this photo. That seems to be the reason for explaining the long shutter speed. A great photo Dan from a real fun time day. Thanks for the fun time together!
Happy New Year to you too!
Cheers Paul

I like very much the glowing effect of the waves! The picture as a whole is a true representation of the ruggedness of Vancouver Island as I have known it to be during my 4 year stay in Vancouver, BC. This shot is a keeper.
Thank you for your visit and comment on my photo, "Vernazza, Cinque Terre". I appreciate it.

Hi Dan, This is an amazing shot. The PoV, composition, effect of water on the rugged coast line makes this picture "perfect". Thanks for sharing

Dan,
Nice to see an HDR shot which isn't horrible! (There are some shockers you know!)
I don't know about "supernatural" - but I can well imagine that lifeis about to leave the ocean for the first time.
Overall, strong shot, well done.
