Photographer's Note
Sanaa at dusk, taken from the rooftop terrace of Taj Talha hotel. I was not staying there, but non-guests can go up to the terrace for the view (try doing that in elitist Dubai). I did not bother erasing the profusion of unsightly satellite dishes, there are too many. 45mm. focal length, just before sunset. The sky is as dark as it is because of a departing thunderstorm. This is taken 1 day before the last Sanaa photo I uploaded, which was from the Golden Daar hotel. The workshops shows SANAA BY NIGHT.

Nice light that you have caught here... I love that it is good light and everything is illuminated but the sky is still dark and brooding. I am not such a fan of satellites (or wires, radio towers, etc) but you are right there are so many... But you have captured the reality of your view and showed the irony of the ornate buildings and the clutter of satellites side by side.

Hi Tan,
Very poetic picture with the low evening sun on these beautiful facades. The dark mountains and the dark sky proves night will fall quickly.
Well done

Like Aubrey, I had no idea the Yemen had such architecture. For some reason, I thought it had, (or expected it to have), just plain, monotone, slab-sided buildings. This is quite a shock, but a pleasant one at that. I like the way you have captured it, the low sun casting shadows and a warm glow on the buildings while the receding storm casts grey in the sky. I like the way your photo tells no lies as well - I admire you for leaving the satellite dishes in - many would have cloned them out, but then that would not show the true picture. Good WS as well, I should learn to look before I leap!

Great POV Tan, with really good lighting. So many satellite dishes, which in their own way add a remarkable contrast to the buildings they are attached to!
The workshop brings to mind so many postcards of 'X city by night'! LOL!

Hi Tan
I had no idea that the Yemen has such interesting architecture. This is pretty spectacular and has wonderful detail. Great architectural patterns, artwork and features. Your composition brings this all out splendidly. I might have to investigate this place and pay it a visit. Was it North or South Yemen?

Amazing architecture, Tan, and a very good POV so that you can just see the mountains in the backgroud. Good exposure and saturation. If it wasn't for the satellite dishes you would think that had been taken 100 years ago (if they had colour cameras then). Thanks for these posts from Yemen. I've found them very interesting. Hi Tan,
Interesting view of Yemen capital. Good light especially together with the going storm. Some special architecture there. BTW, I went up to viewpoint in one of Dubay hotel in offices-hotels downtown being not a guest, so it's not absolutely impossible :)
Thanks.

Hi Tan
The evening sun gives wonderful golden tints against the dark sky, and your WS made me laugh!! Curious how some of the buildings lean precariously at different angles. I like the uniformity of style of architecture which make this a truly beautiful scene. Even the satellite dishes seem excusable as they are so evenly distributed.

Salaam Tan

I appreciate the current Yemeni architecture which respects the method of ancestral construction. Contrary to current Egyptian architecture which is terribly horrible; I am sorry by seeing the images of modern Cairo. Out the addition of the parabolic aerials I like the ambient luminosity of this composition.

Hi Tan,
You have some amazing photographs from Yemen...thanks for sharing these...its not often that many people get to see these places. The architectural style here is seen no where else in the world and you have captured it very nicely. The dark sky at the back really accentuates the brightly lit buildings in front.

Hi Tan
This is a beautiful picture, the sun really brings out the colour of the buildings,I have seen some pictures of Yemeni buildings before and really loved them. Very beautiful architecture, maybe someday I will see them fro real.
The satellites dishes dont really come in my way of enjoying the beauty here, in a way they have placed what must be really old architecture into our modern age, it is sad that much about our modern world is quite ugly and unappetising and as photographers we are often finding ways of avoiding those unsightly sights.
My regards to you
