Photographer's Note

This is just a simple snapshot which I rediscovered the other day. I had scanned it long ago but not used it.

This is from a narrow alley in the old part of Aleppo in northern Syria, taken in September 1995. Two boys are learning a trade, the others seem to be just hanging around, keeping company.

Life was normal in Syria in those days, now Aleppo is among the hardest hit cities of the Syrian civil war. In between the reports of the horrible human suffering in Syria I can't help feeling an enormous sadness for the cultural loss the country is witnessing. Syria has among the greatest cultural heritages of all countries, ranging from ancient Assyrian, Roman and early Christian to Arabic and Ottoman treasures.

Not far from where I took this photo is the mighty early medieval Umayyad mosque. Earlier this week its 1000 year old minaret was destroyed during fighting and parts of the mosque were burning. I fear that many other treasures of Aleppo have already met the same fate.

I scanned this from a Kodachrome slide.
