Photographer's Note
I continue with photos from my visit to Petra in Jordan in 1995. Again I prefer to use a less known sight for the main upload, instead of any of the famous buildings that have been posted here before.
As you can see, a visit to Petra involves a lot of climbing up steep hills, at least if you are reasonably ambitious and want to see the important places. Steep hills provide good views, and this is one of them. I don't remember exactly where this is, but it shows the environment generally and how you sometimes have to walk along canyons when going from one area to another. This is not the Siq, shown in my last upload, but somewhere in the "city center".
Here is a larger version.
Another view from above, including one of the typical buildings of Petra, can be seen in a WS. The other additional photo shows a lion.
All photos were scanned from Kodachrome slides.

Hej Gert!
This looks like part of the lower track to the Monastery, and the crowds have noticeably thinned out. There were a couple of small side gorges with stone lions carved near here from memory, before the 800+ steps start in deadly earnest! The people add scale and look like ants from high above. Tfs!

Another fine view, not normally seen, of this unique place. The human explorers add scale as they walk toward the unknown. It is a hard trek to Petra.

Hi Gert,
The presence of the persons has an effect of scale. The point of view is showing the details of the rock formations in Petra. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Gert,
It is a good idea to first show the access road to one of the 7 wonders. It brings us to the experience and emotions that you gain when you walk here in tense anticipation of the miracle that you show more in the WS photo.
Excellent presentation
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hello Gert,
These are remarkably clear photographs, with honest colours, considering they are all scanned from slides.
Your main photograph really captures the sense of drama, inherent in this place.
It is wild and rocky; those travellers, way below, implying a sense of true exploration!
I hadn't noticed the lion until you pointed it out. What impact it would have had, spewing water from its mouth!
I just love to learn about such places and your photograph speak louder than words!
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert,
Another fine note and three more fascinating photographs from your visit to Petra almost a quarter of a century ago.
I very much like your main photograph, very nicely composed with the little row of tiny figures of visitors progressing along and up a path to seek a higher viewpoint of the city. Yet it is a pretty arid and inhospitable landscape and, however well developed the city was in ancient times, life there must have had its hardships.
Your first workshop image shows a more familiar sight of either habitations or graves hewn and carved out of the native rock face and we can only marvel at the determination, skills and sheer hard labour of those who carried out such work.
Your second workshop (which includes the carved lion) is my favourite and I suspect it might also be your own favourite as it includes more easily visible people (visitors as well as a lady selling souvenirs and also interaction between them). and, of course, that lion is of interest to me, especially as I recall reading (probably in a "National Geographic" magazine) some time ago that Petra had been furnished with a remarkable system of various conduits to bring water into the city.
Thank you for these fascinating images and your usual very interesting and personal note.
Wonderful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hej Gert,
Et udmærket overblik af området og dets smukke former i de høje klipper. Menneskerne dernede giver et godt indtryk af hvor stort det hele egentlig er. Det klare lys hjælper også med at vise det meget godt frem.

Hi Gert
its funny how on the main page, this photo looks like...well..NOTHING. Just a pile of stone or rocks. So it basically forces us to click on it, knowing full well there's a good story or an interesting image to be viewed when closer up.
and it is. Looking at the WS's, seeing the exteriors...how did they carve out the stone to create an exterior looking like a building...that must have taken years to do for each one. Then they create a doorway...and you enter into WHAT, a cave? I just find it so interesting. Its almost impossible for me to understand...so inside the rock faces, they had furniture, a home, a living room, bedrooms...i just don't get it. Why go through ALL this trouble when you can probably just build a damn home! haha. There must have been an easier way to live. awesome shots
cheers

Gert, the main photo and the workshops show the canyon environment where Petra was built. Temples and animals like the lion are carved in the rocky face. The area is arid and almost totally mineral. To visit this archeological site the visitor needs to make physical efforts to climb the long and steep pathways. Fine colors, good image quality, regards.

Dear Gert,
This time too, you showed something we don't usually see. I particularly like WS 1 even if it is not the main temple, it resembles to it, but I have never seen those temples from above. The Koda -as usual - made a good job as well.
Best Wishes,
Gy.

impressive rocks in this rugged landscape leading to the mythical place and a fine composition.
The greens are a bit blue but that gives a agreable old fashioned feeling.

Bonjour, cher Gert,
Tout simplement fabuleux de découvrir ces lieux arides, sauvages et voir apparaître une façade d'une grande beauté formant troglodyte !
Un grand merci pour ce partage de 1995 !

Hi Gert
The landscape photographed from a raised viewpoint looks breathtaking and the people walking along the path make us realise how immense those rocks are. I remember walking along a similar path to the so-called Monastery, which is, in fact, another tomb. But the path was paved with stones (it's probably a recent addition; I prefer paths like the one in your photo).
I can see in WS that souvenir sellers were already there in 1995... but these days you would find it difficult to find a SINGLE stall like this to photograph, there are so many of them, one next to each other.
Have a nice Sunday and greetings from Poland.
Kasia

Hello Gert, you achieved a good height from which to take this shot, and it really sets the scene for our visit, showing the track that we might take. The people are well included, providing scale as well as a focal point.
The W/s shots are a useful extra.
Thanks for sharing, your scanning is very successful.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello Gert,
Geographically very close to Israel, but yet - so far for an approach, politically-wise. A place i know many israelis would be eager to visit, not many had the opportunity back when the peace with Jordan was signed, but nowadays no tours comenced for several years already. A real pity.
The place is a marvelous sight, a stunning desert men-made and nature forms attraction.
Wish you a nice weekend,
Ike
