Photographer's Note
I am referring to the dead of Halapja. The men, the women, the children, and the elderly. They died inhaling Hydrogen cyanide. They dropped lifeless like the Autumn leaves. They did not have time to say things like, I love you, to their loved ones. They did not think of bidding a final farewell the way the terminally ill do in our lives. In the minutes that they had, they reached out to each other. They embraced one another. They dropped dead like this father and this daughter...I cried for them, which is not that important, but I also cried for humanity, which I think we should all do from time to time.
That photo have taken in Halapja Museum

sevgili mahmut,

Great comment and a hot topic, Mahmut. Particularly at this time when many people around the world seem to be mourning Saddam's fate and are portraying him as a martyr. This definitely provides some enlightment. Thank you and have a nice day! Manu

Merhaba Mahmut bey,
Sadece Halabja yi degil, hemen hemen bütün Irak-Iran sinirini gazla bombaladilar.
180`000 Kürt 2 ay icerisinde yasamini yitirdi.
Peki neden?
Oysa onlar hepsi sucsuzdu, mazlumdu...Insandi.
Güzel ve cok anlamli bir cekim. Bide düsündürücü.
Renkler harika, kompozisyonda iyi
Elinize saglik

A real Noah's Ark photo!
Great colours, compo and meaning behind the frame!
I like it a lot.
Hopefully one day there won't be any more need for tribute photos like this, and that the word 'victim' will only exist in ancient dictionaries...

It is as if the art work is remembering these people in both the vigour and the innocence of their lives by the bright colours - it is the tragedy of all despots to think that they can have such powers over the lives of others......however inept or otherwise the war in Iraq has been handled I remember the same press and groups that now hound Bush and Blair in the UK hounded them over headlines such as '500,000 children dead in Iraq since Desert Storm' rubbing it in that sanctions only hurt the ordinary people of Iraq whilst the military regime was 'laughing' (some quotes put the death tolls much much higher). Everyone who was active in this way seems to have forgotten the enormous pressure that they were putting on our government - the general population here seemed apathetic though about so many alleged child deaths - when I think of Halapja - when I think of what it means and those indelible images come to mind - I want to know two questions.......how can anyone relate this to Muslim brotherhood and celebrate the life of the man responsible........and what effort, interest and action did they put into anything that might remove his regime before the current war began?
Let the memory of Halapja be our witness.
No smiley but my heartfelt wishes
best wishes Kev

Merhaba Mahmut,
This is a very powerful image indeed. I just wish it was sharper and had more depth-of-field. Shooting from a lower angle may have had more impact, too.

well your note is very powerfull and the mounument as well. but now its not just the kids that are being masacered, almost 600,000+ iraqi lives have been lost becuase of the barbarian invasion. everybody losses in war except the war profetiers. i like your POV in this photo since its filled with common faces of my sacrificed country men & women.

Grat photo of a colourful monument to the victims of this catastrophe, which I didn't know of. well, I know of what happens to the The Kurds, and I suffer with them in my heart.
May this site TE be a place of remembrance for them, and a tool for peace all over the world§
Sincerely.
