Damavand Entourage, a photo from Mazandaran, East

Photographer's Note

The Mount Damavand is seen in this shot surrounded by the white clouds which often accompany it.

It is also the growing season of the big red poppies in Lar Valley.

Damavand is the roof of Iran (the highest peak: 5671 m) and a potentially active volcano. The mountain is located near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, Mazandaran province and 66 kilometres (41 miles) northeast of Tehran. There are at least 16 known routes to the summit which have different difficulties. Some of them are very dangerous and requires rock climbing. The most popular route is the Southern Route.

Damavand also has a special place in Persian mythology, folklore and literature.

I like the man standing alone in this great mountain landscape. And he is wearing a White short sleeved shirt. Together with the presence of poppies, your photo carries a real message of an arrival of the springtime. Gentle rolling hills and the great gradation of colors. Diagonal relation, composition of the man and the snow covered mountain is simply wonderful. I always appreciate the serenity of you images. Clarity of the image is exceedingly beautiful. The scenery in this shot is spectaular. The scattering of red poppies adds colour to the forground and the solitary figure staring towards the mountain provides a sense of scale. There is plenty of sunlight catching the side of the hills.

Great mountainscape, with this majestic snowy volcanic mountain. A strong image superbly composed with a sense of vastness in wonderful colours, detail and main point of interest well placed. The sky is indeed fantastic, lovely cloud formation nicely shading the peak. Well framed with the foreground greenery and the splash of contrasty vivid red wild flowers draw the viewer in, and good sense of depth and scale shown in this picture. Beautiful landscape shot, even the top of the mountain is hiding in the clouds we can still feel it's majesty, the inclusionof the person give a great sense of scale and the specks of red poppy flower adds some color and spice up the foreground nicely. There is something similar to the Atlas Mountain I saw in Morocco. Beautiful work. Thanks.

Hello Atousa,

With the rolling hills in the foreground, Mount Damavand serves up an imposing presence, its crest hidden in the clouds. I climbed Mt. Ararat years ago. It is also volcanic in origin, and located in Eastern Turkey (at the triple-point of Turkey, Iran and the former USSR. It rises to 5165 meters, a full 10% lower than Mt. Damavand. Incidentally, "dam" mean roof in Turkish. Is there a coincidence?
