Photographer's Note

Skegness is so bracing - Number 1.

There's something about an English seaside resort out of season - the sense of waiting for something to happen, without the certainty that it ever will. I've always liked the tackiness; the candyfloss and ice-cream, the sticks of rock and kiss-me-quick hats. There was none of that on this cold April morning, just a lonely young mother looking out towards the empty sea.
The title of the series comes from a famous advertising poster depicting a jolly (or drunk!) fisherman skipping down the beach. Almost a hundred years after the poster was commissioned, the same beach was looking decidedly empty, but a stroll along it was nothing if not bracing.
