Saltburn Horses, a photo from North Yorkshire, England

Photographer's Note

Saltburn is small Victorian seaside town on the North East coast. This shot was taken on the same day as my first post, on one of the rare occasions the tide is low enough to walk round the end of the pier. Horse riding has been a popular leisure activity in the UK for perhaps the last 15 years at least, and most days sees a group of horses and riders on the beach. When I saw they were about to go round the end of the pier I positioned myself under the pier to use the supports as a frame. It's pure chance I also caught some gulls in the picture.
I needed to straighten the horizon a little, and while cropping took some of the sky away to emphasise the symmetry of the image, not only with the pier supports, but with the reflections. Minor sharpening and contrast adjustment with curves.

Lovely composition, and good timing for this shot.
It's the reflections that make this one stand out.

I've read your note - I would have considered cropping much more of the sky, to just above the seagulls.

Very well exposed picture. The reflections on the beach are really amazing but it would be better due to cloudless and rather dull sky to crop the image lower.

Hi Kath,
Nice view here shooting between the pier supports and using them to frame, I gues you must have been pretty fast shooting to get this view in these conditions. I like the low light falling onto the scene, it warms the colors very nicely and also contributed to the quality of the reflection. Well done !

Gorgeous image! Wonderful framing and lighting... and the birds above create the perfect effect. I can almost hear them squaking and the waves crashing... great reflection too! I don't think I would crop it any more from the top though, I like it as is...

Another great photo Kath, It has wonderful reflections which immediately catch your eye, the colour of the horses and riders is nicely contrasted against the sea, the composition is great and a big thanks to the seagulls for joining in.

It's one of those photos you know is going to be good when you're looking at the thumbnail image!

I like those pillars in the sides and the way you used them to frame your picture. It seems to me like if we're looking through some aperture in a wall to discover the free world and those riders !

And with sush nice place and colours, for sure we'd like to join them !! It must have been a nice ride along the beach !!

Excellent capture. The reflections and lighting are both superb. You caught the decisive moment of this shot and the two pier supports act as a good frame. If there had been 3 gulls in the picture about each hat what a co-incidence that would have been!

there are so many things to speak about on this pic;first of all a very good capture,I don't think they might have noticed you.the naturel frames of pier supports on two sides is really nice,maybe u were hidden there.the birds over their hats are adding some dynamizm to your compo,the reflection on the sandy beach is beautiful than the original scene.

i have resisted critiquing this photo so many times ... but today I am going to resist no more ...
Only bad thing I can point out about this photo is that the last leg of one of the horse has been cut a bit by the pillar ... besides that this photo is all gold ... the birds, the horses ... the reflections ... everything creaes such a synnergy in this photo ... excellent results

wow, i love the luminance here. Great soft warm colors. The mood is brillant. I always read that a group of even objects looks better. And here I think you have an example.

And the reflection gives so much life. Superb point of view!

Excellent. As the Gabriel (pitai) says the group of horses looks better than if there was only one. But there more things that makes this photo superb. Some of them you remark them in your note: the frame with the pier supports, the reflections, the gulls and symmetry. There are other like the light, colors, clarity and how the sea merges softly with the sky (impossible to see if the picture is tilted). But over these there is the most important: your photo makes me want to be there, enjoying the cool breeze, all that beauty.

A nice capture of the horse riding on the beach. It is a really a treat and luxury that one can combine going to beach and riding horse all together. Nice frame and good capture of the ocean wave and the gull in the sky. Well done.

Fantastic shot. I feel a lot of pure chance in it. Yes, I like it!
The gulls you probably have never seen before you looked at the picture - "Oh, that's nice!"
Reflection in the water very good,not to mirrory.
Lighting could not be much better - another chance.
I allways wonder what it is with a horizon, I almost allways get it crooked and I can see a lot of people "correcting horizon slightly". It is as close as I would get to the horses too. If I had a choise, I would like more sky above and little less at the bottom to create more balance between sky and earth.
